A group of 45 ethnographic portraits, groups and views in Fiji (c.13), Samoa, Santa Cruz, New Hebrides/Vanuata, Papua New Guinea, Australia/Aboriginals, and New Zealand/Maoris, 29 albumen prints (of which 23 mounted on cabinet cards), others gelatin silver prints, variable tones, 5 with short tears/losses at edges, images typically c.148 x 100mm., c.1880s/early twentieth century (45)

Includes three images of a re-enactment of Fijian cannibals hunting and preparing a feast by Thomas Andrews, canoes (3, 2 with villagers), villagers and village scenes (one with turtles and yams, one captioned "Native Village, Port Moresby" in the negative, one of 3 boys playing cricket), portraits (including Santa Cruz Islander, Fijian and Samoan men, Samoan women, "Ratima Whakaete [Maori chief]" by Elizabeth Pulman, "241. Sophia" [i.e. Te Paea Hinerangi, a Maori female guide], full length of 2 aboriginal men with weapons, etc.). The later series, of which 2 signed "R. Newbold Photo" in the negative and all captioned on the verso in pencil include Vanuata/New Hebrides (villagers, and carved figures on Wala), and a series of 10 views of Rotorua (lake, hotels destroyed by the Tarawera eruption, 1886), etc.
