SHANGHAI

Shanghae [sic] Almanac for the Bissextile or Leap Year 1856, and Miscellany, FIRST EDITION, 6 folding tables, one full-page wood-engraved illustration of Shay-Le at Yuh-Wong (with loosely inserted letterpress description), vestiges of pressed flowers/seaweeds on some leaves, occasional light spotting, toning or damp-stains and a few marginal chips, some gatherings shaken, the tables loose, publisher's printed blue wrappers, re-sewn in Chinese style, stained, housed in modern morocco-backed solander box titled in gilt on spine, 8vo (255 x 170mm.), Shanghai, Printed at the "N.C. Herald" Office, [1855]

RARE SHANGHAI ALMANAC, ONLY 3 COPIES LISTED ON OCLC. Published annually, from 1852, the almanac includes useful information for foreign residents including sailing directions for the Yang-tsze-kiang, custom-house report on the total export of tea, movements of the sun and moon, etc. Also includes miscellaneous articles, taken from the Peking Gazette and other publications, on aspects of Buddhism and Buddhist temple sculptures, the new port at Swatou, notes on an excursion to the T'ai-Hu and neighbourhood, and a day trip to Ning-Po and T'heen T'hae, sailing directions for the River Min, etc.

Provenance: Charles W. Orne, contemporary ink ownership inscription on title and upper cover. Orne is listed in the almanac as an employee of the American mercantile trading house Russell & Co., which had moved its headquarters to Shanghai from Canton in 1852. In 1857-8 Orne was elected to the municipal council of foreign settlements, representing the interests of foreign merchants.
