PONTING (HERBERT)

'The "Castle" Berg. Scott's Last Expedition', CAPTIONED AND SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER ("H.G. Ponting") in pencil beneath the image, bromoil print, on original mount, framed and glazed, image 320 x 455mm., sheet to view 360 x 475mm., [1910, printed 1920s/30s]

Footnotes

"This was the most beautiful iceberg seen by the Expedition. It was frozen into the ice about a mile from the hut, and provided Mr. Ponting with material for many fine studies. In shape it resembled a fine old medieval castle, hence the name given it. It was about 100 feet high, and was a good example of the picturesque shapes into which overturned icebergs are sometimes worn by the erosive action of the wind and water" (Fine Art Society Exhibition catalogue, No. 71). Ponting photographed the Berg dramatically in darkness by using magnesium flash-powder.
