Footnotes
Presentation copy of John Ross's second voyage "to search for the north-west passage in 1829–33. In a series of sledging journeys [Ross's nephew] James proved that Boothia was a peninsula, as the Inuit had told them, and not an island as John had hoped; and on 1 June 1831 the British flag was raised at the north magnetic pole" (Hill). Due to faults with the expedition's ship Victory the party spent a record four and a half years in the Arctic before being rescued.
