Footnotes

William Henry Bartlett was a British landscape artist and writer. He is widely known for his topographical illustrations of the Balkans, the Middle East and North America. By the end of the 1830s his popularity was at an all time high, with critics praising him for his ability to perfectly capture his chosen landscape.

In 1837, George Virtue began to publish a series of Bartlett's works which came to be the most successful of all the series of his works. It was written by Nathaniel P Willis and called American Scenery: or Land, Lake and River Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature.
