ATKINS (JOHN)

Voyage to Guinea, Brasil and the West Indies... In His Majesty's Ships the Swallow and Weymouth... with Remarks on the Gold, Ivory, and Slave-Trades, second edition, printer's device of a ship on title, publisher's advert before title and 60pp. of adverts at end, damp-stained, lower margin of title strengthened with old paper resulting in loss of a couple of letters of imprint and price, modern calf-backed marbled boards, lettered in gilt on spine [cf. Footnotes

Atkins was the surgeon on an expedition dispatched to seize pirates operating on the African coast, during which Barbados and Jamaica were visited. The voyage introduced him to tropical diseases, and this work "contains the first English description of African trypanosomiasis [i.e. sleeping sickness]" (Garrison-Morton).
