GHANA, SIERRA LEONE AND THE GOLD COAST RAILWAY - PHOTOGRAPHY
Footnotes
Images include portraits of locals (approx. 15, including the Chief of Akropong with his supporters, woman having hair styled, stylish men in European costume, a Kroo Ju-Ju woman, a Ju-Ju man), Kroo Boy dance, Fantee funeral procession and burial (5), festivities for the Coronation of Edward VII (procession of chiefs and children, races and tug-of-war for local inhabitants), views of Sekondi, the port and seascapes in Sierra Leone, Colonial groups "up country", and the railways (engines, laying tracks, bridges, etc.).
The images compiled by, and perhaps taken by, Captain Harry Adcock (his name and English address on verso on one image), who was stationed in West Africa working for the Gold Coast Government Railway. Gold was discovered at Tarkwa in the 1890s prompting the building of a railway from there to the coastal port of Sekondi, which was undertaken between 1898 and 1901, extending to Kumasi by 1903.
