FRITH (FRANCIS)

Cairo from the Citadel. First View, MAMMOTH ALBUMEN PRINT, mounted as issued on sheet with printed caption, image 390 x 495mm., sheet 535 x 735mm., [1858]

Footnotes

AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF FRITH'S MAMMOTH VIEW OF CAIRO, ONE OF "THE BIGGEST, UNENLARGED PRINTS EVER PUBLISHED" (Gernsheim). The viewpoint from the Citadel sweeps across ventilation shafts in the foreground, and the bustling square towards the Mosque of Sultan Hasan, and Mosque of Emeer Akhoor.

Of the images Frith took in Egypt it is these mammoth plates "produced from giant glass plates, nearly a metre squared, [that] are the most breathtaking. Their size, never surpassed, and the suitability of the static, sunny landscape for the photographic process, created images of expansive, spectacular precision" (Tate, website).
