Footnotes

David Roberts produced numerous sketches whilst he was in the Middle East and North Africa between 1838 and 1839, which were worked up into watercolours and later formed the basis for the series of 247 lithographs called 'The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia' published between 1842 and 1849. The present work is a variation of the composition produced in lithograph by Louis Haghe after David Roberts titled 'Temple on Gebel Garabe, called Serabit el-Khadim'.
