Provenance
Anon. sale, Christies, London, 22 June 1962, lot 140 (sold as 'Whitcombe').

The Anglo-American 'War of 1812' witnessed four celebrated so-called 'frigate actions' involving roughly equally matched vessels on both sides. Only one of these actions resulted in a British victory and it seems most likely that the pair offered here depict the opening manoeuvres of the encounter between the 38-gun English frigate Shannon and the slightly larger American frigate Chesapeake. After a short but spirited fight, Shannon's crew boarded the American vessel and captured her earning Shannon's Captain Broke a knighthood and enduring fame.
