Provenance
With Frost and Reed Ltd., London, no. D2676.

The San Josef was a Spanish-built 1st rate captured by Nelson in a celebrated exploit during the battle of Cape St. Vincent on 14th February 1797. In fact, it was Nelson's daring bravery on this occasion which first brought his name to public attention and began his meteoric rise to fame. San Josef remained active throughout the rest of the Napoleonic Wars but was laid up after 1815 and finally broken up in 1849.
