""Foresight" was painted with the eyes closed and non-dominant hand, giving a voice to the present moment, connecting to aspects that represent different parts within." -Claudia Concha
Artist Statement: I am a Colombian American architect and artist based in Los Angeles. I explore the power of calligraphy through abstract paintings, installations, and performances.
My work delves into spontaneity and irrationality through the expression of lines, signs, and calligraphies, where each mark becomes a gesture, an extension of movement, a passage into a boundless space, allowing the gaze to wander and expand. In this context, the line transforms—becoming thinner, thicker, flatter, or more intense—taking on a multitude of qualities that evoke both subtlety and intensity. Through these abstract forms, I seek to capture the interplay between structure and freedom, creating a fulfilling experience and a reflective journey, inviting contemplation on the limitless possibilities of visual expression.
Filling the space between lines and gestures, there is silence. In the quiet, the act of creation becomes a dialogue with stillness, allowing access to deeper perceptions and meaning.
I'm inspired by the anti-compositional forms and gestural techniques of Art Informel, combined with Zen calligraphy and the works of artists like Tàpies, Motherwell, Elaine de Kooning, and Joan Mitchell.
I graduated as an architect from the University of Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia (1994), with a study abroad at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland (1991), and studied arts and the history of architecture in Florence, Italy (1995).
During an eight-year span, I embarked on an introspective journey, painting with my eyes closed and using my non-dominant hand, working exclusively in black and white, through a fellowship with artist Rita Miranda in Colombia (1996–2003). It was during this time that my artistic language emerged.
I founded Claudia Concha-Singular, a furniture design and manufacturing company, in Bogotá, Colombia (2000–2003). I received an MA in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica, California (2014) and became a Soul-Centered Professional Coach at the same school (2015), where I developed ArThrough, a study based on combining the practices of both Spiritual Psychology and art.
