Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, has become a signature, repeated motif in Jim Dine's work. Throughout his seven-decade career, he has developed and refined his own visual language, embedding his unique style into the Pop Art movement of the 1950s and 1960s. In 1982, Dine first began exploring the subject of Venus de Milo. The American artist decided to alter a small, store-bought plaster replica of the famous Hellenistic sculpture. He transformed the classic form by removing the figurine's head and adding layered textures to the previously smooth surface. This pivotal moment cemented Venus into his visual lexicon as this motif would re-appear in countless of his paintings, drawings, prints and editioned multiples.
