Lot Essay
Ambroise Firmin-Didot was the son of the publisher Firmin Didot. He was an educated man with a passion for understanding and collecting antiquities. He began collecting Italian prints, which eventually led him to pursue printmaking himself, something he saw as a logical next step in his research on printing. To deepen his understanding of the printing process, he surrounded himself with printers from across Europe, including German masters and French engravers. He became an important collector of antiquities, books, essays, and works by Old Master printmakers such as Dürer and Rembrandt.
