Lot Essay
In 1987, after completing a group of paintings known as Imperfect, Lichtenstein decided to collaborate with Gemini G.E.L. to produce a series of prints that echoed the imagery of his paintings. This series quite literally pushed the boundaries of printmaking, as each image breaks out of the traditional border and extends into the margins.

Before arriving at the Gemini G.E.L. studio on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, Lichtenstein would send black-line drawings, later working in person with the printers to develop the color and printing methodology. This multi-medium series required careful attention to proportion, overpainting, and color theory. The result is a striking body of work that evokes both chaos and wonder.
