Footnotes

Micheline Muselli Pozzo di Borgo Lerner was as brilliant as she was beautiful. Born on the Island of Corsica to an old aristocratic family, she quickly distinguished herself academically, entered law school in Paris at 18 and at 20 became France's youngest attorney ever. As a criminal defense lawyer working under German occupation, she was part of a select group of French lawyers and magistrates who, working with the Resistance, manipulated Vichy regime laws to save countless lives. It was dangerous business: arrested several times herself, she saw her boss, Maitre Joseph Python, arrested, tortured and executed for his Resistance work.

While on a job in New York in 1957, she met and married celebrated playwright and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, author of My Fair Lady, Gigi, Brigadoon, An American In Paris and Camelot and a three-time Oscar winner. Their lives together were the very definition of glamour.
