Footnotes

清康熙 紀年「乙未」 青花龍鳳紋鳳尾尊

The inscription may be read as: 弟子陳鑾輝敬酬 清水祖師花瓶壹對 X龍飛乙未穀X and may be translated as: Follower disciple Chen Luanhui offering respectably to the Grand Master of Qingshui a pair of flower vases, [illegible] on the year of yiwei.

The Grand Master of Qingshui (清水祖師) was a legendary Northern Song dynasty Buddhist monk, Chen Rongzu (1045-1101), living in Anxi, Quanzhou, Fujian province. He was known for building roads and bridges for the local communities, also bringing medicines to residents in need. After his death, he was enshrined as the protecter of Penglai, where he practiced Chan Buddhism. As Anxi residents emigrated to Taiwan across the ocean, they brought the religious practices along and established temples for the Grand Master of Qingshui. The iconography merged with Daoist beliefs overtime, and the deity has become one of the most popular Daoist gods today.
