A LARGE PAINTED POTTERY JAR

Neolithic period, Majiayao Culture, Machang type, late 3rd millennium B.C.
The top of the vessel boldly painted with four large roundels and cross-hatched pattern, the short neck everted at the rim decorated with zig-zagged design, a pair of lug handles at the waist, the body tapering down to a small flat foot.
19 1/4in (49cm) across handles; 17 1/2in (44.5cm) high
