Monteith bowls were a form introduced in the 17th century, predominantly found in silver, as a basin in which to cool wine glasses by resting each stem in the notch with the bowl of each glass in ice water. Porcelain models are rare. See a Kangxi blue and white porcelain model in The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection, object no. 1978.503, gift of Mildred R. Mottahedeh.
