The iconography has received various interpretations. According to Donnelly, the Miao-shou legend depicted here shows Guanyin in this role, saving the son of the Dragon king who transformed himself into a carp. He was caught by a fisherman and about to be sold in the market, when Miao-shou arranged to have him bought and released. See P.J. Donnelly, Blanc de Chine. The Porcelain of Tehua in Fukien, New York, Frederick A. Praeger, pp. 152-53; and plates 147c, 148a and 152E.
