A GE-TYPE PEAR-SHAPED VASE, FANGHU

Qianlong seal mark and of the period
Modeled on the form of an archaic bronze fanghu, the facetted pear-shaped vessel molded in high relief on the front and back with a large peach-form panel set off by paired square lug handles, the surface covered overall with a pale grey glaze exhibiting a network of dark grey and gold 'thread' crackles extending to the rectangular base covered with a brown dressing and enclosing the six-character Qianlong seal mark in underglaze blue.

This vase exemplifies the fascination with archaism held by Qianlong emperor and the Qing court, both in its form, based on Zhou and Han dynasty bronze vessels, and in the ge glaze of the Southern Song dynasty employed.
