See Chang Lin-sheng, Snuff Bottles in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, pp. 31-32, where the author notes that 'melons and sprouts following upon one another forever' is a common Chinese blessing, suggesting an endless line of descendants. The butterfly, hudie, further amplifies the longevity blessing, as a homophone for the word septuagenarian.

For two other pebble material melon-form bottles, see Robert Hall, Chinese Snuff Bottles IV, England, UK, 1991, p. 29-30, nos. 28 and 30
