A RARE AND FINE CORAL 'VASES, VESSELS AND FLOWERS' SNUFF BOTTLE AND DISH
1750-1800
Of asymmetric ovoid form and carved in high relief in a continuous scene with various slender baluster vases and other vessels issuing a variety of flowers including peony, prunus and lotus and with a large peach, teapot and bowls beneath, with an irregular shallow concave base and short cylindrical neck with flat rim and small mouth, the stone of the most attractive salmon and paler pink tones; together with a shallow oval coral snuff dish, with short foot and rounded oval foot rim.
Bottle 2 1/4in (5.7cm) high; dish 1 1/4in (3.2cm) wide (2).

For a very similar bottle with an identical stopper, see Clare Lawrence, Miniature Masterpieces from the Middle Kingdom, The Monimar Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles, Hong Kong, 1996, pp.68-69, no. 28, where the author discusses four such similar bottles recorded, that clearly originate from the same piece of coral and are presumably carved by the same hand.
