Footnotes

1740-1850 黃玉帶皮刻西王母與靈猴圖鼻煙壺一件
卵石皮浮雕派

The design of a monkey and peach refers to the legend of Sun Wukong and carries immortality symbolism. This popular subject, made famous in the allegorical novel Xiyou Ji (Journey to the West), published in 1592, tells the story of the theft of peaches from the celestial gardens of Xiwangmu, the goddess of the West, by the mischievous 'Monkey King' Sun Wukong.

For another 'Master of the Rocks' russet and yellow jade bottle, depicting five monkeys and fruiting peach trees, See Hugh Moss, Victor Graham, and Ka Bo Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Hong Kong, 1995, pp. 362-365, no. 140. Interestingly it has almost identical mask handles to the narrow sides.
