Huang Chengyan was a reclusive scholar who lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. He does appear in the 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but as a fairly minor character. He is often mistaken for Meng Haoran, another scholar who rides a mule, but who is usually depicted with his assistant who carries an early plum blossom on his shoulders. Huang Chengyan, on the other hand, is either depicted alone, or when he does have an assistant, he carries a double gourd vessel on his back.
