A GRAY-GREEN, RUSSET AND BROWN NEPHRITE JADE FIGURE OF A RECUMBENT HORSE

Ming Dynasty
Resting in a slightly coiled position with front legs tucked under its belly and with its head turned over its left shoulder and held just above the ground and nuzzled at its tail, the mane and tail is finely delineated with lines defining the hair, the ears are pushed a little forward and the eyes, mouth and nostrils are clearly defined, the underside similarly well detailed with hooves and leg muscles deeply carved, the stone of attractive gray-green color with russet and darker brown inclusion to the head and hind region.

Animal carvings such as the present lot belong to a group of naturalistically rendered small sculptures that are skillfully fashioned and sensitively rendered with gentle features attributed to the Yuan and Ming dynasties. A pale green jade recumbent horse in a slightly different posture is illustrated by Jessia Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, pp. 371-372, pl. 26:15; and another recumbent horse with head raised is illustrated, ibid., pp. 376-377, pl. 26:20.
