A JADE CARVING OF A RECUMBENT DEER

Song Dynasty
Slightly looking up with the ruyi-shaped horns at the back of the head, the feet tucked under, the leaf-shaped tail relaxed at the rump, the body with small circles to indicate the fur pattern, perforated on the back for stringing, the gray celadon stone with natural inclusions softly polished.

Recumbent deer of closely related form first appeared in the Tang dynasty, a subject influenced by the gold and silver wares traded through the Silk Road. Compare the similar jade carving of a recumbent deer with its head turned back, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated on the museum's website, collection no. 故玉005621N000000000. Another similar jade recumbent deer perforated at the center for stringing, from the Qing Court collection and now at the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware II, Hong Kong, 2006, p. 63, no. 53.
