A LARGE BRONZE CANDLESTICK

Tang Dynasty
Elegantly modeled, the stepped splaying foot under a wide rimmed drip pan, the 'ribbed' neck rising from a thick circular base and supporting the smaller drip pan, the tall cylinder collar made to receive a candle and hollow through the center, the dark gray metal polished smooth throughout, with light encrustations in areas.

A very similar bronze candlestick was discovered in 2002 at the tomb of Yang Shiwei and his wife (burried 706) in Majiagou, Xi'an, Shaanxi province, illustrated in the excavation report, Wenwu, 2014, No. 10. Compare also the Tang dynasty large white pottery candlestick of this form, illustrated by Tseng and Dart, The Charles B. Hoyt Collection in the Museum of Fine Arts: Boston, Volume I, Cambridge, 1964, no. 62.
