Lacquered wood animals from the late Warring States to early Western Han exist in a variety of styles. Compare a group of three closely related lacquered animals: a deer with large antlers, a monkey holding a branch, and a tiger attacking a boar, in the collection of the Portland Art Museum, Oregon, illustrated by Jenkins and Xu, Mysterious Spirits, Strange Beasts, Early Delights: Early Chinese Art from the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Collection, Portland, 2005, pp. 52-57.

The result of carbon-14 testing is consistent with the dating of this piece, ASA (Alliance Science Art) Francine Maurer certificate, Paris, 30 November 2002.
