A YAOZHOU BLACK-GLAZED JUG

Yuan Dynasty
Handsomely potted in a teardrop shape rising to a flared galleried mouth, the shoulder decorated with a raised band, the double-strap handle connecting the body and the neck, covered inside and out a glossy black glaze stopping right above the foot, the countersunk base unglazed revealing the fine stoneware body burnt buff-orange during firing.

Compare the very similar jug unearthed in 1990 from Yijun county, Shaanxi province, now in the collection of the Yaozhou Ware Museum, illustrated in The Masterpieces of Yaozhou Ware, Osaka, 1997, p. 89, no. 115, described as Yuan dynasty 13th century.
