Jean Després (1889-1980) a connu une carrière prolifique, particulièrement remarquable durant les décennies 1920 et 1930, périodes marquées par une grande effervescence artistique et une quête de nouveauté.
Au cours des années 1910 et 1920, plusieurs mouvements artistiques comme le purisme, le Bauhaus et le cubisme cherchaient à remplacer l'ornement par des formes géométriques fonctionnelles. Influencé par ces courants, et notamment par Braque, Jean Després développe un style personnel mêlant esthétique cubiste et modernité mécanique.
Entouré d'artistes renommés, il s'intègre pleinement dans l'univers créatif de cette époque, amorçant l'essor du style Art déco.
Progressivement, dans la décennie suivante, il affirme son style en s'éloignant de la bijouterie traditionnelle pour adopter une esthétique inspirée du dessin industriel, marquée par la force des formes et la rigueur mécanique.
Ses bagues, aux lignes géométriques et aux volumes puissants, évoquant des pièces de moteurs ou d'architecture, transforment l'objet précieux en sculpture fonctionnelle. À travers ces créations, il impose un langage radical où la modernité s'exprime sans artifice, dans la matière brute et la précision du geste.
Cette bague constitue une déclinaison d'un modèle « pièce moteur » présenté au musée des Arts décoratifs de Paris.
Jean Després (1889–1980) had a prolific career, particularly remarkable during the 1920s and 1930s, periods marked by great artistic effervescence and a quest for novelty.
During the 1910s and 1920s, several artistic movements such as Purism, Bauhaus, and Cubism sought to replace ornamentation with functional geometric forms. Influenced by these currents, especially by Braque, Jean Després developed a personal style blending Cubist aesthetics with mechanical modernity.
Surrounded by renowned artists, he fully integrated into the creative world of the time, initiating the rise of the Art Deco style.
Gradually, in the following decade, he affirmed his style by moving away from traditional jewelry towards an aesthetic inspired by industrial design, marked by the strength of forms and mechanical rigor.
His rings, with geometric lines and powerful volumes reminiscent of engine parts or architecture, transformed precious objects into functional sculptures. Through these creations, he established a radical language where modernity expresses itself without artifice, in raw material and precision of gesture.
This ring is a variation of the model displayed at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
