The "Panthère" is one of Cartier's most famous and enduring design motifs. With its origins reaching back to the drawings of the House's chief designer Charles Jacqueau from 1914, the great cat was used with increased frequency by Cartier's artistic director Jeanne Toussaint from 1933. Affectionately nicknamed 'Panther' herself by Louis Cartier, Toussaint originally included the motif on vanity cases and deco boxes, before designing the renowned three-dimensional Panther jewels created for some of Cartier's most prominent clients.
Thus, for over 100 years the Panthère has been the embodiment of Cartier style. Constantly reinventing itself, every decade has seen a new interpretation and the designs remain as contemporary and fresh today as they did a century ago.
