The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 381r52, dated 19 August 1985, is consistent with the dating of this lot.
The figurine is distinguished by a very elaborate headdress composed of rosettes. Both her face and the rosettes are cast in moulds, conveying a vitality and naturalism that distinguish the work. Her hourglass figure is richly adorned, including an intricately rendered necklace, a girdle, and an impressive pair of large, heavy earrings, all carefully fashioned from handmade coils. Likely produced for personal devotion, the figurine's modest scale and portability would have allowed for the presence of the divine into domestic or private ritual contexts. Similar figures from the same period are preserved in major collections, see the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (27.135), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1978.539) and the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques-Guimet, Paris (MA3322).
