Footnotes

Modelled with serene features, the Buddha's wavy hair swept up into a chignon forming the ushnisha above a distinct widow's peak. His almond-shaped eyes are half-closed in meditative introspection, prominent brow bone and eyelids, the cheeks softly rounded, with a fleshy nose and small, composed mouth. See closely related example, in Isao Kurita, Gandharan Art II – The world of the Buddha, Tokyo, 1990, p. 122, pl. 332.
