STATUE DE BOUDDHA EN SCHISTE GRIS

Ancienne région du Gandhara, II-IIIe siècle

A GREY SCHIST FIGURE OF BUDDHA
Ancient region of Gandhara, 2nd-3rd century
82 cm (32 1/4 in.) high

Footnotes

Wearing monastic robes with broadly spaced drapery folds that cover both shoulders, the Buddha is depicted standing on a rounded plate set upon a lotus base with downturned, grooved petals and a row of stamens. His wavy hair is gathered into an uṣṇiṣha, and a prominent urṇa appears on the forehead between gently arched eyebrows. The remnants of a halo can be seen on the shoulders. These features symbolise the Buddha's enlightenment and transcendent nature. A thick back plate connects the base to the figure and provides strength to the ankles.

The squat body and broad shoulders resemble an example in the British Museum, see Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture in the British Museum, London,1996, fig. 12. The style of the horizontally grooved lotus petals on the base resembles those on a sculpture from Taxila, see Ingholt, Gandharan Art in Pakistan, Pantheon Books, New York, 1957, p. 126, fig. 322.
