STUPA EN ARGENT

Thaïlande, époque Ayutthaya, XVIIe siècle

A SILVER STUPA
Thailand, Ayutthaya period, 17th century
41.6 cm (16 3/8 in.) high

Footnotes

The stupa is composed of a ringed bell-shaped main section that rises in harmonious proportion to a pointed spire, culminating in a three-tiered parasol (chatra). Incised floral patterns decorate the base and dome.

It was probably used as a reliquary and originally enshrined within a brick stupa of the same form, a type found throughout Thailand. Such an object would likely have been commissioned by a monk or high-ranking layperson as an act of merit-making. For comparison, see a related example in the British Museum, dated to the 16th century or later (acc. no. 1957,1014.1.a–b).
