Head of Sale, OMP and 19th Cent Art
The present Crucifixion is conceived as a tightly focused devotional tableau. At the center, Christ on the Cross is flanked by the Virgin, shown nearly collapsing in grief and forming the emotional core of the composition. To the right, the Magdalene, crowned and raising her hand toward the Cross, introduces a dynamic gesture of supplication, while to the left, Saint John stands nearby in composed witness, lending the scene a stabilizing counterpoint. The background opens onto an animated Flemish landscape, its distant architecture and subtle topographical details enriching the narrative without drawing attention from the central drama.Belonged to the early-sixteenth-century, the painter of the present work appears inspired by leading figures of the Antwerp School, such as Quentin Massys (1466–1530), Joachim Patinir (1480–1524), and Joos van Cleve (1485–1540/41).
