TÊTE DE BODHISATTVA EN STUC

Ancienne région du Gandhara, IIIe-Ve siècle

A STUCCO HEAD OF A BODHISATTVA
Ancient region of Gandhara, 3rd-5th century
8.5 cm (3 3/8 in.) high

Footnotes

The serene expression of the youthful face is framed by corkscrew ringlets rendered with delicate precision. He wears a bandeau in his hair, and large circular earrings. Traces of a halo are visible, and the features are highlighted with traces of red paint. The urna marked in red polychrome at the forehead signifies divine insight, identifying the figure as a Boddhisattva. The work exemplifies the graceful synthesis of Greco-Roman naturalism and Buddhist devotion that flourished in ancient Gandhara. For comparison see a similar head published in Ingholt, Gandharan Art in Pakistan, New York: 1957, pl. 545.
