A BLACK-LACQUER ARMOUR WITH A RUSSET-IRON SUJI KABUTO
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century
The components lacquered black with kon-ito odoshi (dark blue lacing), comprising a 32-plate russet-iron sujibachi mounted with a two-stage gilt-metal chrysanthemum tehen kanamono and a five-stage shikoro ending in fukigaeshi applied with printed leather and gilt-metal tabane-ine mon (crests of bound rice stalks, used by the Kamei clan), the giltwood maedate carved as a large blossom; the ryūbu menpō forged in two detachable parts with a pair of otayori no kubi (pegs) to the sides and another under the chin, with deep wrinkles and lacquered russet brown, fitted with a four-stage yodarekake; the gomai okegawa tatehagi dō decorated with a tabane-ine mon in gold lacquer, the munaita applied with printed leather and a matching gilt-metal crest, the lower lames laced in kebiki odoshi, fitted with seven sections of five-lame nerikawa kusazuri; nerikawa sode; chain mail and splint plate Tominaga-gote with trapezoidal plates on the upper arms and matching gilt-metal crests on the tekkō, the upper part with byakudan-nuri lacquer; Etchū haidate with large trapezoidal plates on the upper parts and the shino suneate; a large cotton sashimono with a wood-sorrel family crest in black and white; with an armour stand and one storage box with a lacquered leather cover
