A LARGE SATSUMA-STYLE VASE
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century
The tall baluster vase of typical Satsuma-style form, with a gold-lacquered/gilt-metal stand and mouth decoration, painted in polychrome enamels and gilt, on one side a Chinese immortal holding a branch of peach, surrounded by karako (Chinese boys) in a forest clearing, on the other side a group of Chinese warriors, all beneath a band of lappet ornament just under the mouth, two further bands of ornament around the shoulder and another around the foot
