Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
The baluster vase richly decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt, one side with a Chinese emperor seated in state outdoors, scholars and attendants writing on a desk set before the emperor's throne, other courtiers to left and right in a lakeside setting; the other side with a group of six haloed rakan (Buddhist disciples) and attendants; the two scenes separated by fabulous animals and birds; the shoulder with two hō-ō birds and intricate geometric and other decoration
