A Satsuma Tea Set
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Comprising a teapot, cream jug, sugar bowl and cover, and four cups and saucers, each painted in polychrome enamels and gilt, each piece except the saucers with an oval panel to either side depicting men, women, and children enjoying festival celebrations, temple visits, or country excursions, the panels separated by passages of rich floral decoration and the lids with geometric and floral ornament; the saucers each with three almost circular panels with similar decoration; each piece marked in gilt characters on a red enamel ground Ryōzan kore o tsukuru (Ryōzan made this)
