Footnotes

Otake Chikuha was born in Niigata Prefecture into a prolific and talented artistic dynasty. Both his father Kokuseki and his elder and younger brothers Etsudō and Kokkan were painters and Kokkan was often Chikuha's rival, remaining active for several years after his death, while Etsudō's daughter also trained in Nihonga (neo-nativist Japanese painting).

His training began early, at the age of four, and by the time he was six he had already received the art-name Chikuha that he would use for the rest of his life. In 1896 he moved to Tokyo and became a pupil of Kawabata Gyokushō and also took less formal instruction from a wide range of other leading artists. From 1908 he focused his energies on the government-sponsored Bunten exhibition, inaugurated the previous year. He would, unusually, show as many three different works at each Bunten in large formats including pairs of six-panel folding screens, or even double pairs of screens, garnering many of the top awards.
