Each of rectangular form with everted sides with a roiro and mura-nashiji ground, lacquered in gold takamaki-e, e-nashiji, hiramaki-e, and gold togidashi maki-e, enhanced by kirikane, decorated with clam shells for the kai-awase shell-matching game, each shell alluding to different chapters of Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji), the handles embellished in gold hiramaki-e with bamboo and plum mon (crests) among scrolling karakusa ('Chinese grasses'), unsigned; with a lacquered wood storage box with an inscribed paper label Maki-e kai-awase Genji-kō kobon (Maki-e Genji Incense Trays with Shell-Matching Design)
