This type of tea bowl is said to have received the name 'Irabo' in Japan from the sandy and slightly rough feeling of the clay body and glaze against one's skin when holding it. Bowls of this type and other glazed stoneware vessels, perhaps not originally made to serve the powdered green tea known as matcha in Japan, were imported into Japan during the 16th and 17th centuries and greatly appreciated by the rustic wabi-style tea masters.
