The inscription on the lid calls the present lot a Seto yobitsugi chawan. Seto ware is considered to be one of the 'Six Ancient Kilns' in Japan, along with Bizen, Echizen, Shigaraki, Tanba, and Tokoname. The yobitsugi technique takes pieces of ceramic which may have originally come from various broken pieces and combines them to make a new vessel. The silver rim, commonly seen on Chinese tenmoku tea bowls, is often applied to give a more comfortable mouthfeel to the vessel when it is used for drinking, or to cover up a flaw on the lip.
