This vessel may have been made for a variety of purposes. A slightly larger piece in the collection of the Kobe City Museum is termed a hachi (bowl, basin), while a similar-sized vessel in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York is called a tea bowl. See bunka.nii.ac.jp/heritages/detail/446343 for the former, and www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/63114 for the latter. There may also be a connection between the motif on the vessel and Christian ritual in Japan during the 16th and early 17th centuries.
