A KAWARI KABUTO (ECCENTRICALLY SHAPED HELMET)
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th century
The zunari (head-shaped) bowl forged with a medial ridge and hammered up at the front with a crescent-shaped eyebrow, all covered in bronze-coloured lacquer finished in a rough texture in imitation of cast bronze, the mabizashi (peak) trimmed with rolled metal edging, the bowl fitted with a five-lame shikoro (neck guard) laced in blue and orange, terminating in small fukigaeshi (turnbacks) applied with gilt-metal mitsudomoe (triple-whorl) heraldic crests, the crown fitted with a lacquered wood frill in the form of an onigawara (decorative roof tile) lacquered with a constellation of stars in gold hiramaki-e; with a wood stand
