A BLACK-LACQUER ARMOUR WITH A NERIKAWA KABUTO (LACQUERED RAWHIDE HELMET)
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century
With kebiki kon-ito odoshi (dark blue lacing) and kiritsuke kozane, comprising a nerikawa kabuto lacquered russet brown with standing ridges, the other elements of the helmet all iron, the crown finished with a five-stage tehen kanamono, the lacquered-iron mabizashi trimmed with gilt-brass fukurin, the bowl fitted with a five-lame shikoro terminating in large fukigaeshi decorated with the maru ni gomai sasa no maru (bamboo-grass crest) of the Takabayashi family in gold lacquer, the bowl further decorated with gold-lacquer and animal hair wakidate formed as hare's ears and the lacquered wood maedate formed as a long-horned demon with applied animal fur; the menpō forged in two sections with a removable nose plate and applied with a stiff-bristle moustache and chin tuft, fitted with a four-lame yodarekake; the okegawa yokohagi dō formed of solid iron bands covered with embossed lacquered leather laced with hishinui (cross-knots), knotted and spaced, with kebiki odoshi on the lower part of seven sections of five-lame kusazuri, the lowest lame applied with boar's fur; chūsode; oda gote with matching crests on the tekkō; splint and chain mail haidate; shino suneate; with an armour stand and one storage box
