Footnotes
Edmond Lachenal (1855-1948) was a leading figure in the French art pottery movement at the turn of the 20th century. His Art Nouveau ceramics gained international recognition and are now held in major institutions such as the Louvre in Paris and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Lachenal began his training at the age of 15 in the studio of Théodore Deck, whose fascination with Islamic ceramics, particularly Iznik wares, left a lasting impression on the young artist. By 1889, at just 34 years old, Lachenal was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair. His vibrant faience pieces, featuring polychrome glazes in Deck's distinctive style, captured the attention of both audiences and judges alike.
